Methods to install plug-ins in Photoshop 32 bit and 64 bit.

How to install plug-in filters in Photoshop (32 bit)

There are two methods to install:
  1. Installer - some Photoshop compatible plugins have an installer that will guide you through the process.
  2. Copy - you need to copy the files (.8BF) into the Plug-Ins sub-folder of the Photoshop folder. For example, for Photoshop CS it's typically located at: Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins (for Windows) or Applications\Adobe Photoshop CS\Plug-Ins (for Mac OS).If you have installed Photoshop in any other location you should look for the Plug-Ins folder there. Next time you start Photoshop, the plugins will be available in the menu Filter (or Automate).

TIPS:
  • You can classify your filters by developer or by task. Just create a new folder inside the Plug-Ins folder and put the files in it. However, the list of plugins in the Photoshop menu (under Filter) looks different from the list in the Plug-Ins folder. In the Photoshop menu plug-ins are usually classified by developer.
  • You can install your plug-in filters into any folder outside Photoshop, you can select an additional plug-ins folder in Photoshop Preferences. Call the command Edit on Windows or Photoshop for Mac OS, then -> Preferences -> Plug-ins & Scratch Disk. Select Additional Plug-ins Folder, then use the button. Choose to select a folder or directory from the list.

  • More filters show up directly in the main Photoshop menu Filter but some plugins appear in the menu Automate.

How to install plug-in filters in Photoshop (64 bit)

  • If you use Photoshop CS4/CS5 64 bit on Win 64 bit Copy the files with the ending _64.8bf into the Plugins folder of Photoshop CS4/CS5. For example: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5 (64 Bit)\Plug-ins\
  • If you use Photoshop CS4/CS5 32 bit on Win 64 bit Copy the files with the ending .8bf into the Plugins folder of Photoshop CS4/CS5. For example: C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS5\Plug-ins\

TIPS:
  • If you set the Additional Plug-ins Folder in Photoshop (using the command Edit -> Preferences -> Plug-Ins), to add the path to a folder with plug-ins in Photoshop 32 bit on Windows 64 bit, you can get an error message from Photoshop that it does not know that kind of file. It happens if the folder has a 64 bit plugin. Photoshop 32 bit tries to upload it but can't recognize it. Not a big problem, but it's very irritating to get the error message each time you run Photoshop. To remove this error message just delete the 64 bit file from the folder used as the Additional Plug-ins Folder in Photoshop preferences. If you use Photoshop 32 bit you do not need 64 bit files there.
